1926 - 1959
Shipleys is a New Zealand owned and operated business that has delivered comprehensive audiovisual technology and services to the South Island and beyond since 1926.
For over 98 years, we have remained a leading name in our industry through continuous development, and delivering service with integrity, passion, and genuine care for our clients and our craft.
We began as Shipleys Sound Systems, installing speaker setups and supplying high end technology for a variety of events and projects. Recognizing the potential of emerging television technology, we later rebranded as Shipleys Radio and Television to explore and integrate the latest broadcast technologies.
In 1952, at the Christchurch Industries Fair, Shipleys became the first in New Zealand to demonstrate a television broadcast—eight years before the first official television transmission in the country.

1960 - 1989
As technology continued to advance in the 1960s, Shipleys expanded into high-end videography and broadcasting. Investing significantly in these camera and video hardware.
In 1960, our team began providing closed-circuit television coverage and videography services for businesses and sporting bodies, establishing ourselves among the first in the region to offer these solutions.
The company was later rebranded to Shipleys Video Systems to reflect our speciality in this area, with a focus at the time on filming seminars, training sessions, and educational programs. We produced and distributed a diverse range of instructional content designed to support professional development in New Zealand and worldwide.
During this period, we also widened our services to include filming commercials and content production for local communities, businesses, and internationally renowned marketing agencies such as Saatchi & Saatchi and TMP Reynell.
1990 - 2010
This period saw significant expansion in our Systems Department, an area of our business where we employed the latest technologies, integrating hardware, sensors, software, and control systems across a variety of environments.
Our software engineers collaborated closely with our integration team to develop and install these solutions, primarily in the education and corporate sectors, helping institutions and workplaces operate more effectively.
We also strengthened our presence in Queenstown, supporting the region’s business event and tourism sector with audiovisual services, while providing integrated technology solutions for the retail, hospitality, and education sectors.
Having a well-established base in Queenstown enabled us to maintain a consistently high level of service throughout the South Island of New Zealand, ensuring reliable support for a growing range of clients and more cost effective pricing.
1990
In the late 90s we established a base in Queenstown to provide audiovisual services and technologies.
2000
Our software engineers work with our technicians to integrate audiovisual and IT products in both private and public companies.
2010
We work closely with the New Zealand Government departments.
2011
Shipleys has worked on events where trust and reliability are paramount.
2020
The company was renamed from Shipleys Audiovisual to Shipleys.
2024

2011 - 2025
Our Audiovisual Departments across the South Island have serviced a number of prominent events over the years, and integrated technology in novel and diverse applications to enhance experience and help people connect. Shipleys has worked on events where trust and reliability are paramount; such as a public address by President Clinton, an APEC conference and a Gala dinner for the president of China. We have worked with many international delegates, politicians, business leaders and companies such as Samsung, Emirates, Apple, Mercedes, and many more.
In 2020 the company was renamed from Shipleys Audiovisual to Shipleys, retaining the Shipleys name from 1926 and creating a unified brand that reflects our full service offering in a modern technology environment.
We continue to lead the industry in introducing, adopting and implementing new technology. Staying ahead means helping our clients lead their industries too. And while plenty has changed since those early days of audio and broadcasting, the values that drive our approach have remained the same.
